What the Feng is Feng Shui?

As I was moving into my first apartment, I stumbled across an unfamiliar book titled "Feng Shui for your apartment home". My first instinct was to rearrange the living room to my own personal style, but instead, I read. Finished the book in a matter of hours, slowly moving my furniture according to the chapter I was in. I am a firm believer in how energy (both negative and positive) affects your being, so I figured I'd have to be a firm Feng Shuier too.

Apparently, Feng means wind and Shui means water. So technically speaking, I read a book on Wind Water for your apartment home. Weirrrrrd.
Anyway, in Chinese culture, both wind and water are associated with good health and fortune. Bad Feng Shui can mean the opposite. It is based on the Taoist vision and understanding of nature; especially on the idea that the land is alive and filled with immense "Chi" A.K.A. energy.

Did you know it is absolutely horrible for your bed to face your front door? It is known as the "Death Position". Even if your door faces a certain direction it is called the "Total Catastrophe Position". (Late warning, some of the terminology in this book will make you want to burn your house down to start anew)

Its almost impossible to put into words how this all works and how it looks in a home without plagiarizing  So here I have found what I think the be the best picture of how a room is supposed to look, according to ancient Taoists. (Picture below is from the article "Your Bedroom by Numbers: Feng Shui Edition")

Assigned #5: Media Shmedia

Media is such a broad topic...
Since we've stared talking about it in class, I've realized just how broad it really is.
It comes in all forms. From the time you wake up until the time you lay your weary head to rest, you are exposed to the "Power of Media".

"Media is like socialism... it is always changing but it is controlled."

When I hear "media", I think news, when I think news, I hear gunshots in school cafeterias, bombings in federal buildings, and ranting activists. The media now is nothing more to me than what some "news" pundit read, while horrifying images are put on display. I've heard people ask before why they don't just call those delivering the news actors and actresses. Whether you're poison is CNN, NBC, FOX; they all might as well be Warner Bros or Dreamworks.

What I'm trying to say is, if you typically like being spoon-fed BS, I would suggest tuning into your local news station.

"Everyday millions of people are infected with MILF or the Media Intimidation Labeling Factor. This means, whatever happened on that normal tempered day in your hometown could be spun into epic proportions just by simply going viral.
Strap on your goggles and earmuffs to protect yourself from unsafe media." (Gregg Greener)
Note: Rare side effects include mindlessness, regurgitated news tourettes, and sheer ignorance.

Assigned #4: Moore Than a Critique

When you think of Michael Moore, you don't typically think "man of the people" or "critically acclaimed filmmaker", at least I don't. Especially after movies like Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine. Although these are fine documentaries (if you're bored out of your mind) they are not necessarily the most unbiased films you'll ever come across.
It is hard to say what is really "factual" in the movies, even in documentaries such as Capitalism: A Love Story; filmmakers all want you to believe what they do. Moore did a fantastic job showing us what "average joes" have to say about the issue. Speaking in rhetoric terms, he really pulls the pathos strings with every testimonial. Whether it was a family of toothless hillbillies loosing their generational passed down home, or English language learners losing their long time jobs, everyone can relate to people who are suffering.
The scenes in the movie that showed Moore requesting taxpayer money back from the "big wigs" on Wall Street were a personal favorite. Yes, he didn't actually get money from them, but the symbolism was well worth the watch. Michael Moore's attempt to end capitalism in this film gets everyone's vote, (including mine) except for the 1%.

Do you have the time?

For spring break, my family decided to travel to Catalina Island. During our travels, my dad and I got to talking about daylight savings, a concept I'm still not all too familiar with.
Of course once we passed state lines, our phones' clocks bounced back one hour. Since daylight savings began on March 9th, obviously our phones then skipped ahead an hour. I don't have a whole lot to say about this, but I do have a question; what happened to our phones' clocks at midnight on the 8th?
I imagine it probably just looked hilariously confused by going straight from 11:59pm to 1:00am but I can't really be sure.

Was anyone watching?

Assigned #3: ASU's "creditability"

While you work full time with a family at home, earning a degree from a traditional four year college is nearly impossible. ASU is finally stepping up their 21st century game. By adding shorter semesters, students can now earn their degree in almost half the time.

In addition to catering to the needs of the working student, an accelerated program encourages more participation from the new generation of learners. These students, such as myself, find it hard to wait thirty seconds for a computer to start up, let alone fifteen weeks to earn a grade in a course.

Concerned parties like HappyTexan believe that shortening of classes will compromise the programs. I feel that the new classes may require more work to accommodate a shorter timeframe, but dedication is what gets you a degree.

I have to give a hand to SculptorDad. Seeing someone use word "creditability" made ME laugh and want to leave a comment. He brings a few good points, "same course, same amount of hours, just concentrated..." So, for those who are willing to work harder, why not reward them with a shorter course?

Assigned #2: Fully Exposed

After every story on the news from the capture of a serial killer, to tragic stories like mass shootings, always comes some sort of "alternate" idea of what really happened. A Conspiracy Theory is "a theory that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot by usually powerful conspirators".

In December of 2012, "the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history" (The Associated Press) took place at an elementary school in Newtown, CT. From this tragedy, came tons of conspiracy theories. One claim that it was a hoax sticks out because of the popularity of the video.

This particular theory was created by a group who believes that the whole school shooting was a conspiracy patched together by liberals just to promote tighter gun control laws.
Some details that this video takes issue with include the following:

There was more than one gunman
Police were seen chasing a man through the woods by the elementary school, so he must have been a part of the shooting. The media showed an intense chase, going after who was supposedly the second shooter, through the woods and police capturing Chris Manfredonia, the father of a child who attended the school.
The number and type of guns the shooter used.
Shooter Adam Lanza used a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle as his weapon of choice. Creators of the video banked on footage of police removing a long gun from the trunk of Lanza’s car. “This reveals the ‘Big Lie’ of the mainstream media … the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle was left in Lanza’s car,”(Alex Jones, NaturalNews) turns out the gun removed from Lanza’s car was a shotgun he never used. Lanza brought three guns inside the school, the AR-15 and two handguns; all of which were found inside the school.

Who is Gene Rosen?
This video fixated on Rosen’s account of that day. He sheltered six children during the shooting, but theorists have alternately claimed that Rosen’s accounts are generally suspicious. They have also claimed Rosen was a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Rosen and the bus driver contacted the childrens parents, four of which came to pick them up and the other two he dropped off at the fire station. Is is possible that he shares a name with someone in SAG?

No one, not even the parents, looked sad.
This claim is just absurd. Every human being mourns in their own way, and just because media doesnt show every tear shed for this horrifying event does not mean it was fake.

Overall, this production of a so-called "hoax" is absolutely ridiculous. Imagining what the family of these victims has endured is almost impossible with and without harassment like this. It really is a shame that some people have so much time on their hands and so much knowledge but choose to waste it on hurting others.

Not to mention... its not as if the government couldn't pull off something like this flawlessly if they wanted to.

Help?

As the years go on, I find myself holding onto more and more STUFF. Honestly I am a pack-rat, but recently moving into a one bedroom 500sq ft apartment has got me cutting back. One thing (well really many things) I refuse to get rid of are my collections.

I have many of them, too. Postcards, ceramic cupcakes, painted birdhouses, handmade objects, etc. Most of which are displayed throughout my home.

I have a group (15 or so) vintage cameras. I've been picking up from estate sales and whatnot. Today I sat down to do some research and didn't come up with a whole lot. I'm not looking to sell, I just would like to know more than how to use these bad boys.

If you know  how to look up more on these than I do (besides the camera wiki page) please let me know. Or feel free to do my research for me. :)

Oh and sorry for the bad photos, I used my camera phone...
