My brother sent me this meme when I explained to him how my job search was posing to be more difficult than I had expected.
Getting a job is not the hard part; it's finding one. Looking for a job to fit your qualifications and standards is also known as "being picky".
Being picky is unacceptable for some people. Like a high school student for example. Living at home, driving the family mini van on weekends... what could they possibly need from a job anywhere but Mickey Dee's with minimum wage at $7.65? I worked a few different fast food jobs in high school, to pay for my car, gas and some extracurricular activities. Now, as an adult with real bills to pay, I cant say that a minimum wage job would cut it. I recently watched a show called 30 Days, starring Morgan Spurlock (the dude from Supersize Me). In this particular episode, he and his fiancee lived off minimum wage for one month. They strated in a new state, got an apartment, then got jobs. With no transportation aside from their Chevrolegs, they managed to find jobs close to their new home. Along the way, they struggled with health issues, taking care of family (kids), and just plain bad luck. At the end of the 30 day trial, they were over $1000 in debt with a roof over their heads and food in the fridge.
As I watched I couldn't help but ask myself; how do people do this everyday of the year? It hit me then, I'd rather be judged by other adults for working a minimum wage job than for not working at all. The show opened my eyes and after some research I learned about something called "The Fundamental Attribution Error". I suggest you read up on it. Moral of the story, pickiness isn't much of an option with pride like mine. While these other people work 40+ hours a week, I could be collecting hundreds of dollars a month for unemployment and food stamps instead of sucking up my pride and working for Taco Bell.
